About the Name

OYE! Tours gets its name from 2 places. In Spanish, the word “oye” means "Listen up!" or "Pay attention". OYE also stands for "Open Your Eyes". At OYE! Tours our challenge is to live up to our own name. We want you to have a great time on our tours, but will provide lots of opportunities to really listen up, pay attention and open your eyes to the communities, towns, and villages we will be traveling to. Our region of focus is Latin America and the Caribbean, with a special interest in Cuba.

About Community

OYE! Tours believes in giving back to the communities we visit on our travels. Each tour will collect sporting goods (new or used) to take to our host communities. In Canada, OYE! aims to promote sport, fitness and social justice. Because there are already great organizations in Canada working to make sport more accessible to all, instead of starting something new, we prefer to support their work. Project Freeride is a volunteer run organization that aims to give new bicycles to underprivileged children living in Toronto. Every child should experience the sense of camaraderie and independence that comes from zipping along a path or down a hill on wheels. If you’re interested in donating sporting goods for an OYE! tour please contact Gerry Ugalde directly. If you want to help a child experience the thrill and freedom of riding their own bike, visit http://projectfreeride.com for ways to help.

Gerry Ugalde, Founder
About the Founder

OYE! Tours was founded by Gerry Ugalde after 13 years of travel experience in Cuba and 7 years of coordinating group travel to the island. As the daughter of Argentinean parents who LOVES fitness, OYE! is Gerry’s dream of ”having her cake and eating it too!”. Gerry doesn’t just know Latin America by osmosis; she’s done her homework. With an undergraduate degree in Latin American studies and a post-graduate degree in Management (Latin America focus) she speaks Spanish fluently -- and can manage quite well in Portuguese. As for the fitness side, Gerry is a Can-Fit Pro certified personal trainer and Waterart certified Aquafit Instructor. When not cycling across Cuba, Gerry is happiest spending time with her nephew who recently said her name for the first time and her newborn niece.

Richard Ugalde , Guide
With over 25 years of road racing experience and 10 years as a track racer, Richard “Mango Face” Ugalde is the perfect cyclist to show you Cuba. In a former life he worked for a rental car agency in Cuba so he knows the island (and the BEST places to eat good and cheap food) extremely well. He boasts a handful of medals from the Pan American Masters Cycling Championships for 2001-2005. When not chasing motorcycles and trucks on his bike, Richard dances a mean Salsa and makes incredible mango milkshakes. He speaks Spanish, Italian and bike…now that he has moved to Canada, Richard's English is coming along well. But no worries, he will still be leading most tours.

Edilio, Guide
Edilio (no last name, just Edilio) rides at least 100 K everyday. This guy just LOVES riding his bike. He is best on LONG rides because he’ll keep you safe and focussed on the road and well, to be honest, it’s because he is also the massage therapist at the Cycling Academy in Ciego de Avila. Though we only get the pleasure of Edilio’s company when we’re near Ciego, he’ll make sure his presence is known, either from his great post ride massages, or the guava bars he supplies for long rides.
